Are you wondering what the Firebird sock looks like from the front?
The colors are reversed on the socks of course, but they would also look beautiful not reversed I think.
I also think this sock would look gorgeous in peacock colors.
And speaking of peacock colors.... I am taking part in this year's Tour de Fleece on Ravelry. My goal is to spin enough yarn for 2 pair of socks during the Tour de France. I don't really watch the Tour de France, but I'm always happy to spin.
My first project is this beautiful Bluefaced Leicester wool (BFL). Bluefaced Leicester is a long lustrous wool with a fine diameter to the wool which makes it soft enough for next to skin. The long staple length will make this a good wool for socks. This particular wool that I'm spinning is not superwashed, but I like to hand wash my socks anyhow. You can easily get superwashed BFL these days. And for those of you who are not spinners, I'm excited about the new trend in BFL sock yarns out there!
I'm spinning this 3-ply and preserving the color sequences.

SIGH... firebird is amazing. I love how they look in the red/black with the color reversed. I do love the peacock roving and think that will be so beautiful spun - can't wait to see that once you're done. I REALLY want to learn to spin. My favorite socks are made with handspun yarn - they are delish!

I was wondering: what technique is the colorwork on Firebird? It looks so complex!
That fiber you're spinning is going to make some gorgeous yarn!

I think Firebird would look wonderful in peacock as well--but the red and black really calls to me!

I think the socks would look outstanding in a peacock color.

I like the fact that Firebird looks different on the 2 fronts of the socks-can't imagine how you first conceive and then execute the designs!

I love, love red, but those peacock colours are just beautiful, and would also be something else in the Firebird pattern. I've never knit with BFL, but I can see it in my future! And, I am just tickled that I have won a pattern! Thank you, knitting goddesses!

OK, Firebird is my new favorite. Maybe.
Posted by: Sarah | July 06, 2009 at 11:15 PM
SO when you design... whats your favorite part? coming up with the imaginative new designs? Working up the sock itself for the first time? the oohs and aahs? :)

I think it would be fun to make Firebird with just the foot and the cuff- I might be able to accomplish that much pattern in a reasonable amount of time!!!
Posted by: ReadingKnitter01 | July 07, 2009 at 03:53 PM
Good luck with Tdf. Excellent fun. And I am loving the non-matchedness of Firebird. They are gorgeous.

These socks are just incredible! Your first book was amazing, but this book will be astounding!
Posted by: Connie | July 09, 2009 at 07:48 AM
I've never dared to try my hand at colourwork socks. I'm not sure that I can keep the floats loose enough. This pattern is still awfully tempting though.

Those are amazing socks!!! Totally thrilled that I won something. Trying to keep distracted here since hubby is out of the country on work trip.
