socktoberfest!

Happy October 1st.  I'm starting off October with a sock binge!  Because it's Socktoberfest baby.  heheheh.

Here are my started socks for Socktoberfest (they might go to my sockret pal, but I haven't decided yet)

And here is the stash I've acquired for the next 2 pair.  All this yarn is Trekking sock yarn. I'm just making up  the sock pattern as I go (I have a basic formula that lives in my head).  I sort of wish I had a solid to go with the variegated on the socks I've started because then I'd do a colorstranded pattern.  But I haven't decided yet where I'm going with these socks.  I will have a 28 hour train ride starting tuesday, so I think at least a pair of socks might come out of that.

I'm kind of excited about the train ride, it's the Coast Starlight route that I'm taking from Eugene to Los Angeles.  It's supposed to be a really beautiful ride and go through areas inaccessible by autos so I hope I get to see some beautiful scenery.

Well, I'll be home on Weds evening and back to my regularly scheduled life (more or less).  I never want to leave Eugene, but Mr. Bonnet is home waiting for me and wishing me back.

fiber for OFFF

I just typed a long post and then lost it... grrrrr!  So now you're getting the condensed version, sorry about that.

Oy!  am I tired!  I've been dyeing for days.  See the fruits of my labor here.  This is only half of the fibers I'm taking, plus all the yarns too!  I really hope I do well at OFFF because I could sure use the money!

And I found out that my paper was finally published.  You can see it here.  I'm excited to have a paper even though my academic career is on hold at the moment.  If all goes well I'll be going back to UCLA in the winter quarter (january).

And here's a beautiful burl and ebony spindle.  This is made by Karen and Tom Berglund.  It's really gorgeous and spins very nicely.  The yarn is a merino/tencel blend and it was spun on a wheel, not on the spindle.  But I tthought it dressed up the photo nicely.

I felted the little hat I made in my first machine knitting class.  It was a little too scratchy for a preemie cap and that's what size it turned out.  It makes a lovely little bowl, just the right size for holding my business cards!

Sand & Sea Baby!

Today my pal Karen took me to the Sand & Sea Knitting Guild meeting. YAY! more knitties to play with in my life! It was such a nice group of relaxed people, very supportive and loads of knitting talent. I love to see the things that other people knit because so often I would never think of knitting what they knit, but then when I see it in person I get whole new perspectives on patterns and fibers and it stretches my puny little imagination! Too bad I didn't have my camera with me. I'm really looking forward to getting more involved with this group.

Well, I didn't mention this before because I didn't want to jinx it ya know... but it's now official! I am one of the winners (2nd place original design) in the Spin-Off Poncho contest! Woo Hoo! My poncho will be in the Winter edition of Spin-Off and I can't wait to see how they photographed it because it wasn't easy for me to photograph! The colors are yellows and lavenders which are sort of muted and it's hard to get the beauty of the color to show in a photograph. The poncho is a lace poncho, but sort of robust lace, not laceweight. I designed it myself... and it's really soft because I spun the yarn from a merino/silk/angora blend. I don't know if I'm allowed to post a photo so I'll wait until the magazine actually comes out... but you can color me tickled pink! Update, the magazine hit the stands so I guess it's fair to post a picture now!

Springtime Shawl

This is a pattern that I created myself for a lacey shawl. It's knit from 1930's baby fingering yarn. I wore this shawl to my wedding, which means I knit it about 9 years ago. Sadly, the yarn has disintegrated and these pictures are all that's left of this shawl
