I just learned that Mary Walker Phillips passed away earlier this month from complications of Alzheimer's disease.
Mary Walker Phillips was a knitter who looked at knitting beyond the wearability into the art of stitch form. She wrote several books including Creative Knitting, and Knitting Counterpanes.
She was a pioneer in knitting with unusual materials like wire and created beautiful sculptural knitted pieces that were hung on walls as art. She really influenced me in the early part of my knitting life and seeing some of her lace wire pieces got me started knitting lace, now a lifelong passion of mine.
Rest in Peace Mary Walker Phillips. The world of knitting is much richer for having known you.
